A Teacher In 1975: Judith Roden qualified as a teacher in 1975 and has studied at the Universities of Wales and Liverpool. Although she is experienced in teaching all age groups, Judith has a particular interest in the early years. She is currently the Year 3 Coordinator for the undergraduate initial teacher education programme and Primary Science Team Leader at Canterbury Christ Church University College.
The Bullock Report (1975) was the first to acknowledge that to lose one's first language is to lose one's culture and identity: 'No child should be expected to cast off the language and culture of the home as she crosses the school threshold, and the curriculum should reflect that part of his life' (Bullock 1975, p. 286). The Committee recommended changes in objectives, curricula and methodology in language education.
Even as those concerned with scientific manpower were reporting a decline in the growth rate, those who were looking ahead were speaking of the need for substantial increases. The Manpower Report of the President, published in June 1967, predicted that in 1975 the United States would need 13 million people to fill professional and technical occupations, 40% higher than the 1966 figure of 9.3 million. The report also predicted that the supply of engineers in 1975 would fall 15% below needs, while the number of scientists would be barely equal to the need.
