Advances In Medicine: A synergistic "breakthrough" may actually be composed of many layers of interrelated synergisms, each important in its own right. Some will provide new or improved methods of basic scientific research, which in turn will lead perhaps to truly unpredictable serendipitous innovations. A most important example may be the synergism of lasers, holography, and computers—a combination that would permit improved spectro-scopic and three-dimensional examination of complex molecules and proteins. The resulting advances in biochemistry, chemistry, and molecular genetics could bring far-reaching improvements in medicine, as well as revolutionary advances in the control of heredity.
Man was able to cope using such simple methods because population was limited by disease. The great advances in medicine in the nineteenth century led to rapidly increasing populations demanding more and more food. The answer to this problem is the expansion of cultivation, the development of newer and better strains of plants - the so-called "green revolution" - and the introduction of more productive animals.
With the advent of more leisure time and the need for continuing adult education, electronic educational systems may become even more widespread for adults than for school-children. The impact of such systems, particularly for educating the underdeveloped nations of the world, would be profound indeed.
Advances in microelectronic technology are just beginning to have an impact on medical care and should, in the long run, radically alter it. Powerful new electronic tools are being applied primarily in three different areas of medicine.
