Anxious Children To: This also applies to parents who are anxious and over-concerned about their child's progress or their own capacity to help. These parents may, however, need some extra help from the teacher. Whereas the so-called 'competitive' or 'pushy' parents will usually have the confidence to help their own child once they know how to do so, the anxious parent may need more support. One anxious mother we met said that her son finds her 'bossy' but sees his grandfather as kind and tolerant, and suggested that surely he would be a better person to hear the child read on a regular basis.
The results of this ten-school 'Book-in' can best be gauged by its effect on the children. Their work output before, during and after the week-long programme increased, and a general interest and excitement about reading and books was aroused. Schools reported that parental interest had been substantial, and all agreed that the effects had been very beneficial to the children.
Sometimes schools are anxious to ensure that particular groups of children get all the help they need.
Both the CMAS and the sociometric scales were administered by classroom teachers. The results for the three grades showed the more anxious children to be less popular—a statistically significant r of —.32. This was true for both boys and girls. But the relationship varied with the grade: it was high for children in the fifth grade, moderate for those in the fourth grade, and approximately zero for boys and girls in the sixth grade. Such difference may possibly be related to the teachers' influence. Similarly, in a study of sixth-grade children (16, 1953), the pupils who possessed superior sociometric status gave evidence of better mental health than those who were ignored, unwanted, and disliked by their peers.
