Arranged In Small Groups:

Arranged In Small Groups The school environment should provide enough Floor space to allow freedom of movement without interference with others' activity. The desks or chairs should be movable so that they may be arranged in small groups or put to one side in order to give space for dramatization or games. It is essential to have a cupboard, or at least a box or folder for each child's work. "A place for everything" helps to build habits of neatness and orderliness. A workbench in one corner equipped with small-sized standard tools and a supply of boards and nails gives opportunity for woodworking.

The application of physical principles has made it possible to demonstrate the phenomenon of paleomagnetism (the magnetic orientation of some materials in ancient rocks), studies of which have revolutionized attitudes toward the Wegenerian hypothesis of continental drift. This theory stated that the present continents were originally part of larger continental masses that were arranged in two groups and that the position of these groups with respect to the poles was much different from what it is now. During the past 100 to 200 million years the two groups split, forming some of the ocean basins as the present continents drifted to the positions they now occupy.

Groups of three should usually be balanced with the largest picture in the center or two pictures should be of equal size. A better effect is obtained if the pictures in the same groups are similar in character and color value. Oil paintings and water colors hung in close proximity are usually inharmonious unless similar in tonal values, and colored pictures hung close to black-and-white drawings or reproductions have an appearance of inconsistency. Unsymmetrical groups of pictures may be arranged in Wall spaces that are not on the central axis of the room or in cases where pictures must accommodate themselves to adjoining furniture that is irregular in shape. Small pictures look best when hung at eye level. Large paintings that must be viewed from a distance may be hung at a greater height. It is advisable to avoid showing the wires necessary for picture hanging. Pictures should be hung from nails or hooks that are driven into the Wall behind the picture itself, and the picture should be hung as flat as possible against the wall. This can be done by placing the screws near the top of the frame.
