Board Of Health In 1893-1904: He was instrumental in founding the Halifax Medical College and held several chairs there, also serving as president for several years. He was for 16 years visiting physician at the City Hospital, superintendent of the Hospital for Insane for 15 years and later served at the Victoria General Hospital. He was deeply interested in securing legislation governing the study and practice of medicine in Nova Scotia; was secretary of the Provincial Board of Health in 1893-1904, and afterward was chief health officer for Nova Scotia. He was subsequently retired on a pension. Deceased.
His interests thereafter were primarily nthropology, and in 1893 he went to Cam-ge University to lecture on physical anthro-|Haddon returned to Torres Strait in 1898, ding an anthropological expedition that in-ed specialists in many fields. Upon his re-to Cambridge he was given a lectureship ithnology. He lectured widely in the United and Canada. In 1904, Cambridge estab-the Board of Anthropological Studies, and Ion held the position of reader in ethnology 1909 to 1926. The influence of his writing teaching was great. His numerous publications include Black, White, and Brown (1901) The Races of Man and Their Distribution !909). He died in Cambridge, England, on ..pril 20, 1940.
In 1968 the Public Health Service was reorganized into three separate health agencies: the Health Services and Mental Health Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the Consumer Protection and Environmental Health -Service, including the Food and Drug Administration, one of the agencies originally transferred into the Federal Security Agency in 1939. These three health agencies are directed by the assistant secretary for health and scientific affairs, who is aided by the surgeon general of the Public Health Service.
