Brother Of Louis: RENE I, re-na (Lat. RENATUS, re-na'tus, called THE GOOD. Fr. LE BON, le DON), titular king of Naples: b. Angers, Jan. 16, 1409; d. Aix, July 10, 1480. He was the second son of Louis II, Duke of Anjou. He inherited Anjou and Provence, besides claims upon Naples, Sicily and Jerusalem from his brother Louis III in 1434, and these rights were confirmed by Joanna II before her death in 1435.
This may not have been intended seriously and was not publicly known, but the growing power and arrogance of Louis and the fact that Charles' brother and heir, James, Duke of York, was a Catholic, disquieted many Protestant Englishmen. The King's anti-Dutch policy was at least partly motivated by dislike of republics, and many members of the Anglican gentry were sympathetic.
At the treaty of Paris, he gave up lower Languedoc and betrothed his daughter and eventual heir to Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Louis IX. Raymond was not resigned, however. From 1240 through 1243, he attempted to revolt by allying with the English and dissident French barons. His efforts miscarried and, upon his death, the Capetians of France inherited his realm. .
