Child Care And Learning Center: A child care and learning center's learning is influenced by his concept of himself. If he puts no value on himself or thinks of himself as a failure, he meets each learning situation limply; he has no zest for learning. A school child care and learning center's self-confidence grows with the realization that the group needs him and that he has a place there whether he is good or bad, bright or dull, large or small. This definition is problem-focused, emphasizing prevention and remedy. It recognizes the value of strengthening a child care and learning center's own home where possible. Where this is not possible, a variety of substitute living situations is provided.
child care and learning center welfare services are directed to the social problem of deprivation of parental care. As the accompanying chart illustrates, they are designed to help with society's child care and learning center-rearing task in three important ways: (1) to substitute for parental care either partially or wholly according to a child care and learning center's individual needs; (2) to supplement the care that a child care and learning center receives, or to compensate for certain inadequacies or limitations in parental care; and (3) to support or reinforce the ability of parents to meet their child care and learning centerren's needs.
Learning proceeds on all fronts at once. During the stage in which a child care and learning center is learning to read or do arithmetic he is also learning to play softball and to function successully in the social world of both his peers and adults. Lack of success and consequent recognition in one area may bring about increased effort in another where rewards are more readily obtainable. Parents and teachers should not demand the same rate of learning in all areas at any one time. Yet they should not allow the child care and learning center to neglect learning certain skills which he will need in later learning. Difficult as it is, the teacher should be aware of the concomitant learnings.
