Forward Parents Are Now:

Forward Parents Are Now A school's first task is to create the right forum for opening a dialogue between parents and teachers. The first contacts your school makes with parents should be carefully considered, since parents' attitudes are bound to be influenced by the way they hear from the school about PACT. If the first letter home (see chapter 4, pages 32-3) makes them feel thaFlHe schooT really wants their help, because it sees this as valuable to their child's educational development, parents are usually pleased and interested, and look forward to hearing more.

10 Ways forward Parents are now helping in many more areas of the curriculum, and perhaps learning skills themselves need to be looked at more closely in the light of parent-teacher cooperation. Some schools feel they are reaching quite different levels of operation because of the involvement of parents. Where does this take us in planning the future?

Parents may be given euphemistic tides such as 'parent listeners', and relegated to a small room somewhere in the school. Nevertheless, where this is happening at all it is a major professional step forward, and must enhance children's learning and parent-teacher relationships. No one would advocate that parents should be brought into classrooms on such a scale that rooms would be crowded, or that they should necessarily be present for substantial parts of the day. We do believe, though, that such practice should be considered professionally acceptable, and that the work of parents should be fully acknowledged as beneficial to the children's education. This would mean raising the status of parents in a school, and accepting their role as integral to a child's school life.
