Frame The House And Define: This is the front that serves as an introduction to visitors. This is the part of your garden, which, if well done, contributes to the beauty and landscaped effect of the community in which it is located. Nothing is better than a well-kept lawn as a main feature here. Appropriately placed shade trees and discreetly located shrubbery may frame the house and define the boundaries of the lot. A foundation planting that really weds the house to the ground is usually a good addition. Dignity and charm achieved by restraint and good relation of mass to mass and line to line should keynote the landscaping in front of a house. Don't spot single bushes and flower beds in the lawn. Such treatment results in a confused landscape.
The oldest house-in the city is Wakefield, a frame structure erected in 1760 by Joel Lane, from whom the land for the capitol site was purchased, and in whose house the state assembly had met in 1781, in the darkest hours of the American Revolution. Preserved as a historic shrine is the small, frame house in which was born Andrew Johnson, 17th president of the United States and one of the city's own sons. Johnson is again honored with two other sons of the state, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, in a monument in Capitol Square, unveiled in 1948.
A collection of botanical paintings lines the hall wall, adding colour and detail. Although they appear to be hung in a random pattern, they are in fact cleverly lined up to create strong horizontal lines running from frame to frame. This ties in well with the horizontals of the understairs storage, and helps lead the eye from the door into the house.
