From Parents To Offspring: Not only will parents bring varying skills and experiences into school but will also have different goals for and expectations of their children and of themselves. Often the expectations of the teacher or school can be at odds with those of the parents. As teachers, we are sometimes faced with parents whose values or educational or professional achievements are removed from our own. One of the most undermining experiences we can have is when a parent's expectations of his or her offspring are vastly disparate from our own.
The race concept of classical anthropology and biology was unsatisfactory, because it was based on the "blood" theory of inheritance, which assumed that heredity is transmitted from parents to offspring through "blood" and that the "bloods" of the parents mix and amalgamate in the progeny. On this basis, the heredity of a child would be a blend of the heredities of its parents, and brothers and sisters would be genetically identical ; an inbreeding community of individuals, a population, would, if isolated from other populations, become genetically more and more uniform, until the status of a "pure race" would be reached, in which all the individuals would have similar heredities.
Her book fills a long-recognized need, and will be welcomed by all people who like to keep unusual animals as pets; by parents whose offspring bring home unusual guests such as turtles, snakes, frogs, toads, or lizards and expect them to be entertained under the parental roof; and by teachers, who not only have the problem of keeping animals alive for observation in the classroom, but the further problem of answering—for pupils or parents—questions concerning the diet and health of everything from tadpoles to parakeets and hamsters. This book provides the answers.
