Heartbreak House: There is little action in the play, but the dialogue is sophisticated and the characterizations are shrewd. In it Shaw gives his views on international politics, interweaving typical Shavian witticisms with some of the profoundest passages in his works. Patterned after Chekhov, Heartbreak House foresees the breakdown of pre-World War I European society. The house of the title is a symbol of England.
HEARTBREAK HOUSE is a play in three acts by George Bernard Shaw (q.v.), who regarded it as his best work. Written at intervals between 1913 and 1919, it was published in 1919 and first performed in 1920 in New York. The scene is a room, built to resemble an old-fashioned ship's cabin, in a country house in northern Sussex, and the main characters are Captain Shot-over, his two daughters, and various weekend guests.
There are also notable examples of with an atrium (an interior court surrounded 1$ rooms). Some of these are of relatively ancie construction, such as the House with the Wood Partition, the Samnite House, and the House -5^51 Neptune and Amphitrite. In these houses the t ditional plan is modified. The peristilia (cole naded courtyards), the gardens, reception haj and other rooms were oriented toward the sot in order to take advantage of the view towa the sea.
