His Family And Friends: It is significant that a child often chooses as friends those whom he perceives as somewhat similar to him. Moreover, he tends to see best friends as more like his ideal self-image than his present concept of himself (99, 1956). Apparently love has an element of wanting to be like one's preferred friends.
In addition to the child's emotional relations with his family and friends, other conditions play a part in determining his behavior. Among these are illness and the way the ill child is treated, physical defects, diet, play opportunities, and school experiences. Neighborhood conditions, the socioeconomic status of the family, and national and world affairs may have an indirect influence on even a young child's behavior.
The main findings were not unexpected. Every parent interviewed had heard about the school scheme from teachers or their children, and were making an effort to hear their children read at home. It was always the mother who heard the child regularly (at least three times a week), although all the fathers participated. In all but one family others, including older brothers and sisters, grandparents and close family friends, were involved. The parents also said that they had positive regular contact with the school.
