His Family At Lyon: RECAMIER, ra-ka-mya', Jeanne Frangoise Julie Adelaide (nee BERNARD, ber-nar'), celebrated French beauty and social figure: b. Lyon, France, Dec. 4, 1777; d. Paris, May 11, 1849. She was educated at the Convent of la Deserte in Lyon. Her father, a banker, established his business in Paris in 1784, and at the age of 15 she joined him there.
The Spring Fair of Lyon (April) is of world importance. Others worthy of attention in the provinces are at Bordeaux and Lille in June, at Strasbourg and Marseille in summer. Dijon has an interesting gastronomic fair in November; and wine fairs are held at Ribeauville (Alsace) early in May and at Macon, north of Lyon, later in the same month.
RACHEL, ra-sheT (real name £LISA FELIX), French actress: b. Mumpf, Aargau Switzerland, March 24, 1820 or Feb. 28, 1821 ; d. Le Cannet, Provence, France, Jan. 3, 1858. Her father, an Alsatian Jew, was an impoverished peddler who wandered about Europe in his trade and at some time before 1831 established his family at Lyon, where the eldest children, Sophie (later known as Sarah) and filisa (later Rachel), sang and begged in the streets and local cafes. Subsequently the family moved to Paris, where the girls sang on the boulevards.
