His Father In Mexico: Mexico gained its independence in 1821, and in 1822 William Becknell, who in the previous year had freighted goods by pack horses from Missouri to New Mexico, arrived in Santa Fe from Franklin, Mo., with 21 men and three wagonloads of goods which he sold at a tremendous profit. He thus came to be known as "the father of the Santa Fe Trail," which others soon followed.
France tried to maintain a puppet empire in Mexico. The effort began in January 1862 when French troops, along with Spanish and English detachments, landed in Mexico to collect debts. The British and Spaniards ultimately pulled out, but the French soldiers remained and conquered much of Mexico.
