Importance Of Parents: We believe that there is a central need to tackle parents' fears and to demonstrate to them the importance of the part they could and should be playing: it is in the hands of teachers to do this. Where teachers approach parents believing that children's learning will actually improve if their parents help them, and believing also that parents are keen to give this help, they find them ready and willing to co-operate. Teacher attitudes toward parent involvement are already changing fast and many schools have proved themselves able to cope with the problems of time and organization necessary for such involvement.
After the survey I held a meeting in the nursery for the parents, at which the headteacher spoke about the importance of parents reading to their children. All but three children were represented by one or other of their parents. It was stressed that it is never too early to read stories to your children, even if they are still 'babes in arms'. Many parents felt that it wasn't necessary to read stories until their child was able to converse fairly fluently and could, therefore, make some comment on whether they liked or disliked a story. By the end of the meeting the parents appeared to understand that, by reading to their children, they not only entertained them but were also preparing the ground for the 'learning to read' process.
The school's recognition of the importance of parents' interest and concern for their children had produced, if a little patchily, a certain openness and relaxation in the school. Talking to parents and, more importantly, listening to them, was a daily practice. Certain routines made this possible. If they wished, parents could wait for or with their children in the playground and then come directly into school to speak to the head or a teacher about a small or large issue without an appointment or any need to break through difficult procedures.
