Licentiate In Medicine From RAM ON Y CAJAL, ra-mon' e ka-hal', Santiago, Spanish histologist: b. Petilla de Aragon, Navarra, Spain, May 1, 1852; d. Madrid, Oct. 17, 1934. His father was a country surgeon who eventually won distinction as a doctor, and it was from him that Santiago first acquired an interest in anatomy. Santiago was an erratic and rebellious student, and his father disciplined him by apprenticing him first to a barber and then to a cobbler before he received a licentiate in medicine from the University of Saragossa (Zaragoza) in 1873. After a year's service in the Army Medical Service in Cuba, he returned to Saragossa to secure a doctorate in medicine in 1877. He became professor of anatomy at Valencia in 1883, of histology at Barcelona in 1887, and of histology and pathological anatomy at Madrid from 1892 to 1922.

RICHET, re-she', Charles Robert, French physiologist: b. Paris, France, Aug. 26, 1850; d. there, Dec. 4, 1935. He graduated in medicine from the University of Paris (1877) and was professor of physiology there (1887-1927). In 1899 he was elected to the Academy of Medicine. Richet experimented with serums to produce immunity and also with antigen injections.
