Live In Family Groups: Some of the languages spoken by minority groups belong to the Sino-Tibetan language family, although they are not Chinese languages. Included in this group is Thai. Thai is spoken in different forms by ethnic groups such as the Chuang of the Kwangsi region and the Paiyi of Yiinnan province. There are over 9 million Thai speakers in China, mainly in Yiinnan, and they are closely affiliated with the Thai of Burma, Thailand, and other countries of Southeast Asia. These groups have methods of farming and writing and social structures that frequently resemble those of the Thai in Yiinnan who live near the Southeast Asian border. The Thai who live on the non-Chinese side of the border originally migrated from China. The approximately seven million Chuang of Kwangsi have no written language of their own and are polytheistic.
Guemals are timid, nocturnal animals that feed on lichens, mosses, and other vegetation. They live in family groups consisting of one male and one to seven females and young. Qaemals have been so heavily hunted that they" are on the verge of extinction.
The face, sides, legs, and underparts of both species are black, but the back is smoky gray in G. vittatus and yellowish gray in G. cuja; a white stripe across the forehead and down the sides of the neck separates the two body colors. Orisons are nocturnal and typically live in forests and woodlands; they are also found in modified rural habitats. They are mainly carnivorous but also eat fruit and honey. They live alone or in pairs and sometimes in small family groups. Females bear litters of two to four young. Grisons can be tamed and have been used to capture chinchillas and to destroy rats.
