Open House: Looking back to the house from the garden, the house should be an integral part of the design rather than stand out. A conservatory or sun room can be designed to open on to a patio so that in summer, when the doors are open, the garden feels as though it is extending into the house and vice versa. Climbers and Wall plants help soften the harsh outline of a building and act as a Vvnk between tVve house and the garden.
The House of the Surgeon in Pompeii was a typical small house. Few windows broke its whitewashed walls, for living centered in the open atrium. Tiled roofs pitched inward to the atrium, whose sides were lined with rooms. At one end a vestibule and at the other the tablinum, where the lares and penates were venerated, opened from it. Alcoves flanked the tablinum. In larger houses, like the House of Pansa in Pompeii, an open colonnaded peristyle with rooms leading off was added behind the atrium.
Love After the Cold War in an Open House
As a culmination to six months of working and living in Los Angeles, the MAK Center Artists and Architects in Residence will present Love After the Cold War in an Open House of a (Re) Constructed Babylon by a Popular Mechanic.
This weekend-long exhibition of their Final Projects will also include work by guest artists from Los Angeles.
