Other Small Rodents:

Other Small Rodents In other small rodentss the two cornua unite to form a single uterus or womb. The placenta is of the deciduate type and of discoid form. Rodents are extremely prolific. Most species of rodents have characteristic and penetrating odors which arise from scent glands variously located in the vicinity of the anus. The skin, generally covered with hair, is spiny in the porcupines, some genera of which possess prehensile tails. Many rodents furnish furs of value in commerce.

The chief characteristic of rodents is the possession of two incisor (chisel-like) teeth on the upper jaw, and two on the lower, and the absence of canine teeth. As tie incisors, which are the gnawing teeth, are worn away by constant use, growth occurs continuously from the roots. Children probably find more pets among rodents than among any other small rodents mammals. This is due to their abundance and to their general hardiness in captivity as well as to their interesting reactions to humans.

The really essential points to keep in mind are few; but they are very important: (1) Use small specimens and few of them; (2) Keep the water temperature low; (3) Aerate the water constantly and (4) Feed sparingly. IT is usually a problem for the average person to obtain a constant supply of food for some kinds of pets. This is especially true of many of the insect feeders such as toads, frogs, and lizards. It is also difficult to provide enough small rodents for pet snakes when one must depend upon trapping them or upon the ability of children to bring them in.
