Position In Family: Psychologically, brothers and sisters do not have the same parents; no two siblings have exactly the same relation to their parents. It is not position in family by itself that is responsible for differences observed in eldest, youngest, or only children, but rather their position in family in the complex total family situation.
A fix is an accurately located position in family determined without reference to any prior position in family. A running fix is a position in family that has been determined from LOPs, at least one of which was taken at a different time and advanced to the time of the latest observation based on the movement of the vessel during the interval. An estimated position in family (EP) is the best position in family that can be determined short of a fix or running fix; it will normally involve the effects of wind and current.
Individual benefits payable under national assistance were set at about the levels of those payable under national insurance, but in practice they have marginally exceeded the latter in most years. There are several reasons for this. Under national assistance, dependent child allowances are graded according to the child's position in family in the family, whereas under national insurance they vary according to the number of children in the family—and families generally have been small.
