Rapid Growth:

Rapid Growth One undersized boy felt much better when the school physician explained that the X-ray pictures of his wrist bones showed that he had not yet reached his nhysical maturity and that he would undoubtedly grow taller. Rapid acceleration in the rate of growth puts an additional strain on the vital organs and requires protection against overexertion. Uneven growth may create problems of awkwardness and self-consciousness. Inappropriate growth, as in the case of the boy who develops feminine contours, presents still more serious problems of adjustment.

Once a framework has been formed, the most important objective is to keep the climber in check—lateral shoots may grow up to 12ft in a single year and unless this over-exuberant growth is pruned, the plant can soon become a jungle of stems and may grow too large for its allotted area. Severely pruning a wisteria during winter will only encourage even more rapid growth.

At eighteen months he is likely to weigh three to four times as much as at birth, and he may gain two to four pounds more before the end of the second year. During the first two years there is also a rapid increase in height, from about 20 inches to 34 inches, on the average.Although growth is rapid, changes in bodily proportion are relatively small during the first half year. But from birth to adulthood, however, the head size doubles; the trunk increases in length three times; the arms, four times; and the lower extremities, five times (38,1954).
