Reigning Family In Russia: ROMANOFF, ro-ma'nof, the name of the late reigning family in Russia, founded by Michael Feodorovich Romanoff: b. 1598; d. 1645. He was descended through his grandmother from the family of Ruric, the founder of the Russian empire and came to the throne in 1613 by election of the boyars and the higher clergy. The early part of his reign was troubled by the Poles and by turbulent nobles. Western civilization gained an entrance into the country and many foreigners, particularly Scotchmen, became naturalized. France tried to disturb the commercial monopoly of England in Russia.
War with Russia. In the face of these disappointments, Gustav began to neglect his reform program and turned restlessly to foreign affairs. He had long hoped to seize Norway from Denmark after winning Russia away from its Danish alliance. When, however, Catherine II of Russia made it clear that she would stand by Denmark and secretly encouraged Gustav's opponents in Sweden in hopes of overthrowing his regime, Gustav took advantage of Russia's war with Turkey to attack Russia in July 1788. But the Russians managed to contain the sudden attack upon St. Petersburg, which was the basis of Gustav's strategy, and Denmark declared war on Sweden.
(2) While the Genoa Conference of 1922, called to consider economic problems and the resumption of relations between the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic and other European countries, was entering an impasse over the return of private foreign property in Russia, Germany and Soviet Russia developed a community of interest. Germany desired to ensure her eastern frontier and develop Russia's great potentials, while the Soviet government sought by alliance to escape from France's cordon sanitaire, which had been designed to contain both countries.
