Remind Parents That: 4 I also put before parents the powerful argument that they have a wealth of talent which could be invaluable to the school. No one, I remind them, is without something to offer. Parents who may only be able to listen are of use to children to whom
no one ever listens.
Remind parents that we no longer insist on precise accuracy when it comes to understanding what the book is saying, so that if a child makes a good guess, he or she should be praised for trying to get at the writer's meaning. This should take some of the anxiety out of listening to a child's inaccuracies and give more opportunities for parents to make children feel pleased with their own efforts, so that both have a sense of achievement rather than failure.
When I admit a child to the school there are certain things I emphasize. I like to think that, even with parents I am seeing for the first time, a relationship is being formed which will be strengthened as the child goes through the school.
1 I tell parents that they are expected to share fully with us the responsibility of continuing the education of their child. I draw attention to the child's present achievements and remind them that these were learnt at home. I then finalize the argument by asking them to continue this valuable work to the benefit of the child, themselves and the staff.
