Shrub Growth:

Shrub Growth Although deserts cannot be considered as grasslands, since they lack significant grass vegetation, desert shrub areas may be considered grassland, depending upon prevalence of grass species. They are not considered grassland if dominated by shrub growth, even if used for grazing.

Range: Common in Southeast United States; related species in Middle and Far West Description: Looks like common house mouse but feet always white; belly dusky; ears large; tail long; no cheek pouches; reaches length of 5 inches including 2V2-inch tail Habitat: Usually in damp areas with plenty of grassy vegetation and shrub growth Reproduction: Breeds March-December; several litters a year; 5-9 young born in grasslike nests made of grass and other vegetation, placed on ground or high in some shrub.

With the ever-increasing demand for livestock, overgrazing presents a serious problem in many areas, particularly in Asia and Africa where control is difficult due to tradition, local custom, and common land use. Equally disastrous is the removal of grassland for crop production in areas of deficient water supply. After a few years of cropping, these areas revert to weed and shrub growth and are unable to support grass. Types of Grasslands. Grassland vegetation ma) be classified in many ways, as by dominanl species, growth form and habit, site or habitat, or use. A classification based on ecological factors such as growth habit, climate, soil, and biotic influences is commonly used. In this classification primary recognition is given to the influence of climate on species association and growth habit.
