Teach Children To Ask: These propositions will be examined and reflected upon with the benefit of nearly a decade of experience since the implementation of the National Curriculum.
Starting as it did by legislating for Key Stage 1 pupils, many teachers of young children had the opportunity to consider the teaching and learning of a defined set of knowledge, skills and processes which were to be assessed at or towards the end of the key stage. For the first time in the history of English and Welsh education system teachers were being told what to teach and when to make assessment judgements. In other words they were to be made accountable.
Many other kinds of instructional materials are useful for specific purposes. Quiz games may teach children to ask intelligent questions and to give definite, precise, relevant answers. Only the parents of children with special educational needs seem to question the knowledge and experience of those entrusted with their children's education, often the classroom assistant. If a classroom assistant with little prior knowledge were expected to teach 'A'-Level Mathematics there would soon be a huge outcry. Yet the education of our youngest children is in many ways more important as attitudes, habits and ways of learning are being set for a lifetime.
