Variety Of Mother Tongues During the following decade, schools and education authorities were expected to establish language policies that would recognise and support a variety of mother tongues. Bilingual children were to be considered an advantage in the classroom. The Cox Report (1988) reiterated this viewpoint, suggesting that 'these children would make greater progress in English if their mother tongue skills were encouraged and valued' (Cox 1988, p. xx).

ROMANCE LANGUAGES, a group of languages belonging to the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family. They are directly descended from Latin. The major Romance languages include the national tongues of France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Rumania. Among the non-national Romance tongues are Provengal, Catalan, Sardinian, Rhaeto-Romanic, and the now extinct Dalmatian. There are also numerous dialects. After the Germanic group, the Romance languages constitute the largest division of the Indo-European family. They are spoken by over 410 million people throughout the world.
