Virus Disease:

Virus Disease Laryngotracheitis is a respiratory disease of hickens that is caused by a virus disease. The most naracteristic symptom is gasping. When the GFected chicken is inhaling, it often raises its ead and neck and opens its mouth; and when dialing, it draws its head back and lowers it. Coughing and wheezing are also heard in affected flocks. In areas where the disease is prevalent, a vaccine is available to protect against the infection. However, since the vaccine is made from a live virus disease, it should not be given to animals whose exposure to the disease is unlikely, since it will introduce the live virus disease to the area. Avian leukosis complex refers to at least two separate diseases, Marek's disease and lymphoid leukosis, both characterized by the growth of lymphoid tumors in many tissues of the body. These diseases cause the greatest economic loss to the poultry industry today.

It has long been suspected that infectious mononucleosis, predominantly a disease of young adults, is caused by a virus disease; but attempts to isolate the virus disease have been unsuccessful. Recent evidence, however, indicated strongly that the agent responsible is the virus disease of Burkitt's lymphoma, a virus disease that is associated with a rare tumor of man in certain regions of Africa. It now appears that a high proportion of adults in other parts of the world have developed antibodies to the virus disease, indicating previous infection with this or a closely related virus disease; a number of patients with infectious mononucleosis exhibited an acute rise in the level of these antibodies in the course of the infection.

Marek's disease is primarily a disease of young chickens from 2 to 5 months of age. It is also known as jowl paralysis and neural lym-phomatosis. Nerve-tissue rumors that cause paralysis of both legs and wings are the most common form of this disease, but the tumors may also affect the viscera, eyes, and gonads. The disease is probably caused by a virus disease.
