Worldwide Family Of Autonomous: Since the 17th century the Church of England and her sister churches in Britain have been responsible for the growth of a worldwide family of autonomous churches known as the Anglican Communion, which includes the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States.
GORNO-ALTAI AUTONOMOUS OBLAST, gor'na ul-fi', an ethnic autonomous division of the USSR, situated in south central Siberia. It is part of Altai krai (territory) in the Russian republic. With an area of 35,700 square miles (97,100 sq km), the autonomous oblast coincides approximately with the Soviet section of the Altai Mountains. It is drained by the Katun and Biya rivers, headstreams of the Ob, and it contains the highest peak in the Soviet Altai Mountains—Belukha (14,780 feet, or 4,505 meters ).
The autonomous oblast was established in 1922 on the basis of indigenous Altaic tribes known originally as Oirots. It was known as the Oirot Autonomous Oblast until it assumed its present name in 1948.
GORNO-BADAKHSHAN AUTONOMOUS OBLAST,gor'ns ba-duKH-shiin', an ethnic autonomous division of the USSR, located in Central Asia. Part of the Tadzhik republic, it lies north of Afghanistan and west of China's Sinkiang province. With an area of 24,600 square miles (63,700 sq km), the autonomous oblast coincides with the highlands of the Pamirs. The western section, with deeply cut valleys, is drained by the Gunt, Bar-tang, Yazgulem, and Vanch rivers, right tributaries of the Pyandzh (Panj). The eastern section is a high plateau with an average elevation of 12,000-14,000 feet (3,700-4,300 meters).
